At the time of writing this I am preparing to attend the Summer Conference. By the time you read this it has come and gone and a new clock has started counting down to the NATE Annual Conference & Exposition to be held in Dallas February 14-17, 2005. Many people say the NATE annual event is the best in the industry and I must agree. I find it an excellent place to network, research and relax with friends. The exhibitors and speakers are a great forecasting tool on where the industry is going in the next 12 months, but I feel the remaining time we forget about our role in changing and making our industry better. I think we forget that every new vendor you buy supplies from is helping our industry and may want to be a bigger part of it. Every new employee may want to take a more active role in your company and your association (NATE). With so many doors available to open and so many people that are willing to play a bigger role, we as current members must always keep in the back of our minds that we are the foot soldiers in uniting this industry, and unite it we can.
As the Presidential election looms in the forefront of our daily news, I encourage everyone to vote and take part of this great democracy of the United States. I am 28 years old, and have never voted. I have freedoms that others wish they could have. I have yet to use the greatest freedom of all, voting. I have taken other causes to heart like NATE, but I must remember that I do make a difference. I can make a difference in this association, this industry and this country. So can you.
I had applied to be on the NATE Board of Directors. Patrick Howey called me and informed me that I was not a managing owner and therefore I was not eligible. I have no regrets about not being able to have that chance. I will continue actively working on the Membership Committee in making NATE as loud and strong as ever. I encourage all of you to do the same.
Michael S. Fergus is a member of the NATE Membership Committee and is the Project Sales Coordinator for Capital Tower and Communications located in Waverly, Nebraska. He may be reached at 402-786-3333 or mikef@ capitaltower.org
